Speaking of kings and realms, The Unfinished Swan was originally crafted for PS3 by the incredible minds of Giant Sparrow, a development team whom we are proud to call “family.” Ian Dallas, founder of Giant Sparrow and lead creator of The Unfinished Swan has a fairytale story of his own in how The Unfinished Swan came to be.

In October 2008, Ian submitted “Whitespace” to the still-running indie-dev game showcase at the Tokyo Game Show — “Sense of Wonder.” He was honored to present as one of twelve finalists. After the show, Santa Monica External Studio connected with Ian to help him realize his dream of publishing The Unfinished Swan and to enable him to establish his team, Giant Sparrow.

Creating the beautiful, ground-breaking visuals of The Tomorrow Children on PS4

Hi everyone, today I’m going to talk a little about the tech behind The Tomorrow Children. Hopefully you’ve all seen the trailer and are wondering how the glory we managed to get that crazy surreal look we have.

When the project started we had a meeting with Mark Cerny and he said “I want Q-Games to do something that’s a little…outside the box”. So I took that to heart and decided to use the PS4′s awesome compute power to drive three things: Cinematography, Lighting, and Geometry.

Cinematography

So I immediately drove the technology towards “cinematography” which I think is a much more visually stunning style compared to CG that strives to be realistic. Realistic graphics give us directly what we can see, but cinematography also gives us what we imagine we’re seeing. So for example if you are looking at a green field on a cloudy day, the raw photons hitting our eyes are actually a bit of a dull green but the brain’s imagination (and this is different for every person) spruces up the image we are seeing, making it more stimulating and exciting.

Pretty much every movie you have ever seen has gone through this kind of ‘colour grading’ process, the most recent ‘fad’ of which is a process called ‘orange-teal’ which boosts orange in the highlights and blue in the shadows plus a number of other tweaks. Recent TV series such as Breaking Bad, Utopia and True Detective rely on this heavily to set up atmosphere and scene tone.

So I thought to myself, why not do this for games too – but not via a few simple ‘tone mapping’ parameters, let’s go the whole hog and create a professional cinematic colour grading process. And we have two major advantages over cameras and their sensors. The first is that a modern 3D pipeline generates a larger dynamic range of colour which gives us more freedom, and the second is that we have ‘Z’ information for every pixel which lets us introduce Z as a parameter into the colour grading process. This lets us do things such bring up black levels in the distance, or even swizzle colours around a little based on distance from the camera.

Lighting

Okay, with that cinematic feel to everything, we started investigating how to get a ‘pre-rendered’ look to our 3D in realtime and we decided we were going to have to go all out and do something that no-one is doing. So we researched and invented something called ‘cascaded voxel cone ray tracing’. The concept is a little complex but it involves calculating and storing light and its direction around the player as she moves in ever increasing cascades of data.

Because we have volumetric data (the voxel cone part) it means we can bounce light around fairly cheaply and any one pixel on the screen has up to three bounces of light hitting it, and from all directions too. Now, by the third bounce, the light is quite diminished in power but it makes that subtle difference that tricks the eye into thinking it is looking at something with true presence.

Interestingly most Pixar-style CG movies that you have seen are only using one bounce and although they beat us in detail because they can spend 30 minutes or more rendering one frame, our lighting is a lot more subtle and effective. For example, we can move a big red object around in real time and watch the sunlight reflecting off of it bounce onto the surrounding objects, and then watch that light bounce again onto other nearby objects that wouldn’t normally be lit (indirect lighting).

Geometry

Finally, we needed some other new tech to build the game around so we started looking into techniques to do deformable landscapes. We wanted something you could dig and mine, or create shapes in but we didn’t want anything too strongly grid based; we wanted it to feel more real. So we went with something called Layered Depth Cubes, which is a way to represent the world without using polygons. Instead, it’s represented as volumes, which are then converted to polygons as needed (for example if the player goes near them and they need to be actually drawn on screen).

The benefit of not using polygons means the data is far easier manipulate and we can do boolean options (addition/subtraction) on the data to cut out holes or to add details and the whole structure remains solid and intact.

The added advantage of course is this all ties in with the lighting above to give it quick, easy-to-access data structures to bounce its light through!

These are just three areas of technology we’ve created for The Tomorrow Children and without the amazing power under the hood in the PS4 none of them would be possible. The future of 3D graphics is here and it is beautiful!

PlayStation Experience Games & Developers Announced

So far, we haven’t revealed much about PlayStation Experience except that a) it’s happening in Las Vegas on December 6th & 7th and b) it’s going to be an awesome once-in-a-lifetime event for PlayStation fans. So we were delighted to see many loyal PlayStation fans take the leap of faith last week, planning trips to Las Vegas to participate in this very special community event. To those of you who already picked up your tickets — thank you! Your trust has not been misplaced. To those of you waiting on some additional information, I think/hope you’ll be pleased with this post.

Today, I’m happy to reveal some of the games and developers you can expect to see at PlayStation Experience — but this is just the start. We’re gearing up for announcements, panels, booths, merchandise, and playable games from these major game studios:



On top of that, throughout the show floor there will be more than 80 indie games, each with their own dedicated booth. You can find a list of many of these indie developers on the PlayStation Experience website, but there are a handful that you’ll have to be there to find out about.

Across these publishers and developers, you’ll encounter hundreds of titles to play over the course of the weekend. We can also confirm you’ll be playing the following games before they’re released (though there will be plenty more on the way).

Of course, as the name of this event implies, there will also be exclusive “PlayStation experiences” only available to attendees. PS4 virtual reality prototype Project Morpheus will make its hands-on (eyes-on?) debut at a stateside consumer event, and we’ll want you all to try out the future of gaming and give us your feedback.

We also have something super special planned for No Man’s Sky. I can’t say much, but let’s say that Saturday night should be memorable for those who can attend PlayStation Experience.

索尼宣布PS+已有790万人 明年初进军中国市场

  索尼在面向投资者和分析家进行的收支报告中提到,PS PLUS会员现在已经有790万人。而索尼的EVP CFO吉田宪一郎表示近期PS PLUS会员增加的主要原因是Activision推出的在线射击游戏《命运》以及EA推出的足球模拟游戏《FIFA15》。

  此外关于在中国开展游戏事业,索尼表示有意向在2015年初全面进军中国市场。不过索尼还表示虽然现在限制有所缓和,不过中国市场仍然有比较严格的限制,需要慎重地一步一步地前进。

Injustice: Gods Among Us & Infamous: First Light Coming to PS+ in December/January

North America - PS Plus: November’s Free Game Lineup

This month we’ve got even more day and date releases into PlayStation Plus including The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth on PS4, Frozen Synapse Prime on PS3 and the Hungry Horde on PS Vita. Our members will also receive the delightful Steamworld Dig on PS4, addictive Luftrausers on PS3 and charming Escape Plan on PS Vita.

Our PS4 members will discover what randomly generated evils lie in the basement in The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, as well as dig for treasures below a western town populated by robots with Steamworld Dig. For PlayStation 3, our members will receive two types of shooters, Frozen Synapse Prime which requires a strategic mind, and the more arcade-y Luftrausers. Finally, our Vita owners can enjoy the touch-screen puzzler Escape Plan as well as The Hungry Horde, where you’ll try and amass the largest zombie horde possible before the government catches on!

All of these games will be free for Plus members starting today when PlayStation Store updates.

Europe - Find out what’s coming to PlayStation Plus in November, and beyond...

Hi everyone. Before we get into the details on November’s new PS Plus games, we understand many of you are waiting for Driveclub PS Plus Edition to be added to the Instant Game Collection, and we apologise that the game is not yet ready to launch. We want you to know that we’re committed to providing Driveclub PS Plus Edition to members when it’s ready, and the team at Evolution Studios is working hard to make it a reality.

In the meantime, we want to make sure you still have some amazing free games to play throughout the holidays. As you may already have read, in the month of November we’ll have The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth and Steamworld Dig on PS4, Frozen Synapse Prime and Luftrausers on PS3, and The Hungry Horde and Escape Plan on PS Vita.

Beyond that, in December we’re adding Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition and Secret Ponchos to PS4′s IGC line up. Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition is the first AAA Blu-ray title to join the Instant Game Collection for PS4, and we think you’re going to love it. Then in January, we’re adding Infamous First Light and The Swapper for PS4. We will still add Driveclub to the PS Plus line up when it becomes available.

New for PlayStation 4

First up this month on PS4 (and Cross Buy on PS Vita), make sure you pick up the keenly anticipated Binding of Isaac Rebirth! This fiendishly addictive action RPG from the twisted imagination of Edmund McMillen boasts over hundreds of hours of gameplay, 450 items, weapons and power-ups to find, as well as 50 bosses to face off against!

Next up, more Cross Buy fun with the beautifully crafted Steamworld Dig, a platform adventure which puts a unique mining-centric spin on the tried and tested Metroidvania genre. Take on the role of Rusty, a mining steambot, as he arrives at an old mining town in great need. Dig your way through the old earth, gaining riches while uncovering the ancient threat that lurks below…

New for PlayStation 3

First up on PS3, acclaimed strategy title Frozen Synapse Prime in which you lead a small rebel faction set on overthrowing a powerful corporation. Control an elite strike team of futuristic soldiers; from shotgunners and snipers, to grenadiers and machine-gunners in the ultimate turn-based strategy game.

Finally, pick up Vlambeer’s stylish arcade shooter Luftrausers! Select from over 125 combinations of weapons, bodies, and propulsion systems and take to the skies to dogfight enemy fighter planes, battleships, submarines, and rival aces for glory, honour, and high scores.

New for PS Vita

Leading the way on PS Vita this month is quirky action puzzler The Hungry Horde. Lead a horde of zombies on a manic mission to swell the ranks of the undead and destroy humanity. Chase, corner and infect humans to grow your horde and stop it being nuked by the military whilst tackling a series of entertaining zombie-themed mini-games.

Also incoming this month, hatch an Escape Plan on both PS Vita and PS4 as you help captive duo Lil and Laarg to escape fiendish mastermind Bakuki’s gloop factory. Switch between the two characters as you guide them through a darkly comic adventure, using teamwork and their unique abilities to find different escape routes.

PlayStation Experience官方确认20个活动内容

  即将于2014年12月6日至7日在拉斯维加斯举行的PlayStation Experience将是SCEA年底最忠实的一个活动,日前官方将公布两天的活动安排,据称将有20个活动内容,虽然没有具体的时间列表,但是内容大体已经公布。而在这些活动中索尼也透露,会有一些大消息将公布。

  活动内容大体如下:

  演员和他们的声优:PlayStation旗下众多游戏中的角色们的配音演员都将悉数登场,其中包括大家熟悉的Ashley Johnson和Troy Baker以外,还会有其他配音演员登场。

  发行商的选择:游戏发行商将和玩家们进行互动游戏,幸运者可以获得包括《行尸走肉》和《边境之地》等游戏。

  《孤岛惊魂4》:开发商将在现场给玩家么您带来惊喜。

  《战神》系列回顾展:圣莫妮卡工作室将把他们10年间开发系列的一些成果和大家分享。

  F2P游戏设计:PS平台F2P的开发者想大家介绍游戏设计心得。

  如何成为一个游戏设计者:如果你希望成为游戏设计者的话,那么就听一下这些成功人士的经验吧,包括顽皮狗等工作室的设计师将会分享他们的经验。

  游戏工作室:SCE旗下全球出色的独立游戏工作室人员都会集聚一堂,包括顽皮狗的Neil Druckmann等。

  来自日本:那些在日本游戏工作室开发游戏的欧美人也会回到美国分享经验。
