Grammar is important just as any other aspects in a language. The problem is focusing on grammar inhibit your ability to express in a intuitive way. From what I perceive, the reason many Malaysian Chinese fail to speak fluently is because they have the propensity to construct a sentence in their mind with flawless grammar before they open their mouth Just forget about the grammar while you speak. Everybody makes grammatical mistakes, even native speakers. You'll automatically steer to the correct direction over time.
